Here’s a collection of characters I’ve drawn and fleshed out recently, and I’ll be adding more as time goes on. They’re mostly (if not all, in some way) related to the Rym world setting, their natural environment, and so you’ll find them there. It’s where all their stuff is, and where they fit in. I designed a lot of lutrai first but I intend to create a much larger cast as time goes on, and I’ve already started sketching another batch. The lutrai came first because their lorebook came first, but you'll see a few Machines and a koba already. More are coming all the time, and I let my Patrons know whenever there's someone new to meet, or fight.
Creating characters for roleplaying games was just an introduction to creating characters and stories in general. You literally create your own and participate, it’s a combination of ad-lib drama, gambling, and writing, with a bunch of math sprinkled in. From this exercise, you end up with all sorts of characters and situations more naturally, without a fully-directed bias. With the right group of people and the right chemistry, you will create and flesh out characters in ways you never could by just writing on your own. The gambling, the roll of the dice, removes ego and plot armour, adding thrill and unexpected or unique outcomes. In short, RPGs are an ideal exercise for writers. It's practically a dojo for the martial art of character-building. Do it. These characters developed under fire, the product of real emotion, thought, luck, triumph, loss - fate. This is what makes a character, not a written history. Walk through it with them.
