THE LAKEHOUSE

The Lakehouse is an example of non-tidal aquatic structures found in the Lakelands and the fens of southern Haun. They may experience periods of high rivers or even flooding but most are build with this in mind, with stout pilings that can be easily replaced, repaired, or adjusted with floatation risers. The structure is non-Euclidean to some degree, a creative arrangement of spars and beams covered by heavy cloth and waterproof adobe, and having no straight walls or corners of any kind. Their version of feng-shui is an open-concept that’s easy to escape from within. The lakehouse shown here is quite large and grandly-appointed, that of a chieftain surely.

Lakehouses are often communal gathering places, though smaller family lodges are more common. The lakehouse serves two important functions by structure alone. Firstly, they're easy to evacuate, with floor bolts to the water below. Secondly, they provide a ready source of fish, fowl, and fresh water, a self-replenishing provision. Some even have water wheels for simple milling or internal fans.

  • Front Porch: Usually 10-15 feet above the water, the front porch is a good place to relax, watch a sunset, and fish. It forms a crescent around the main entry, enclosed by a low wooden railing. The surfaces are waterproofed with a heavy shellac.

  • Sun Deck: This room is oriented to catch the rays of the morning sun, providing plenty of light for growing things. The outer edge is used to grow a variety of herbs and berries to supplements their diet, while the inner room is mostly open to the elements.

  • Big Room: The Big Room is the main room of the domicile, with the hearth at its center. Around the hearth is a sunken area for conversation and intimate gatherings. The rest of the Big Room is kept open for activities, though it may be partitioned with hangings on some occasions. It connects to all other rooms in the house, including the front porch and yard deck.

  • Sleeping Area: Most lutrai have a fondness for hammocks and other simple bedding. This area contains several such sleeping spaces, and only a bit of personalization. The swinging partition arms are more numerous, providing modular privacy.
